MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Julian Hyzler

Senior Instructor

Julian has been teaching students of all ages and abilities for over 30 years. He initially trained at art schools in the UK before specialising in Illustration in London, working for many prestigious clients as a freelancer. Since then he has led hundreds of week-long trips to Italy and around the world, developing over the years an understanding of the Cities and the History of Art in Florence, Rome, Siena, Naples and Venice with his company EASEL&LENS.

The atmosphere generated in the studio is always relaxed and friendly, whilst also being productive and lively, and you can expect positive encouragement to try new ideas as and when you feel confident to do so. Teaching art requires energy, patience and an ability to get as much out of each student as possible, and Julian always strives to do this, whether teaching painting and drawing, photography, design, or illustration. WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING

“ Julian is the one of the best teachers I have experienced. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable about art history and art mediums but he is also incredibly encouraging and enabling. I started my course feeling blocked creatively but with his encouragement and ideas he moved me on to a new level.”

Katie James - London

“The pre-recorded video package was almost as good as having Julian in the studio with you (which I can also unreservedly recommend!). Completing a large-scale painting in real time, punctuated with the flexibility of breaks, allows one to absorb Julian’s instruction at a personal pace. His generous, clear and detailed tutoring make this an excellent way to explore new techniques and subjects remotely, with the bonus of producing a quality painting at the end.”

Janine Strugo - France

“I have been very fortunate to have attended 2 of Julian’s week-long Tuscan courses (the highlight of my trips to Europe) and have had several informative hours of his one on one zoom lessons. Julian’s genuine enthusiasm, teaching skills, subject knowledge, and his friendly disposition make learning from him a great pleasure. I highly recommend Julian to anyone considering attending his classes or enrolling in the online offerings.”

Karel Locher, Australia

“Online classes with Julian saved my life more than once—first throughout COVID and again through several personal trials. That weekly accountability, insightful instruction, and little bit of handholding have propelled my art life by leaps and bounds—even to entering my first show! ”

Dianne Polome - USA

“I first signed up to the Virtual Studio courses in the early days of Covid and have been an avid participant ever since. The format is brilliant - art history talk, group drawing/painting, critique and then a follow-up recording of the class. Julian is a terrific teacher, I’ve learnt a lot, met some lovely people and have had plenty of laughs - what’s not to like ? ”

Jenni Ross - UK

“A girlfriend, an existing student, suggested I join the Easel and Lens online group during the first pandemic lockdown in 2020…what a lifesaver that was! We travelled from Florence to Marrakech and from the Alhambra to Venice using only a paintbrush and watercolours, acrylics or even the merest pencil line. Low carbon footprint too! It was divine: Julian teaches clearly, methodically but with real pace and skill. I’ve learned so much, had the inevitable dud outcomes but so many successes thanks to the past two years with E&L. May there be many more.- ”

Nicollette Krajewski - UK

“I really enjoyed the online courses offered by Julian ( Turin/a month in Morocco). Julian's knowledge of the history and culture provides context and depth to the course. His feedback on our work is helpful and constructive. The courses are accessible, fun, and inspiring. Julian is a skilled teacher.”

Myra Baynton - Canada

“Julian recreated a virtual trip to Turin and Valle d’Aosta for our group of five (from the west coast of Canada) that had to cancel pre-pandemic…he really made us feel like we were there. Julian’s virtual classes are filled with history, enthusiasm, sketch along with Julian and other artists, calmness and positive critiques of our sketch. The next day taped video of the class is a real bonus! I highly recommend a group of art friends booking virtual classes with Julian!! You will not be disappointed!! ”

Joan Head - Canada

“I have been loving my private zoom classes for going on three years. Julian is the ultimate teacher. His instruction is stellar. He is patient, amusing and fabulous with digesting my ideas and discussing them together. Don’t hesitate. Sign up now. ”

Jan Sher-Tuckerman - USA

“Since Julian initiated his Zoom lessons with the advent of COVID in the Spring of 2000, I’ve subscribed to "Virtual Studio 8-lesson” packages, which continue to provide me with creative, productive and joyful artistic learnings and fun! I also look forward to the next series of “Paint together” workshops.”
